Avocado Green Goddess Dressing Recipe
This Avocado Green Goddess Dressing Recipe is a lighter, vegan version of the classic. To get that creamy texture, I used fresh avocado instead of the usual mayonnaise and sour cream. Infused with raw veggies, green herbs, and a ton of flavor, this homemade avocado green goddess dressing is just what you want on top of your salads, meats, power bowls… you name it.
Green Goddess Avocado Dressing
I’m a big fan of the classic green goddess dressing. But sometimes, you just want a lighter, healthier option. And don’t get me wrong — just because this is a vegan green goddess dressing doesn’t mean it lacks in flavor. If you’ve been with me long enough, you know flavor is at the forefront of everything I do.
To elevate this avocado green goddess dressing recipe, I used a combination of shallots, fresh basil, lemon juice, and rice vinegar to keep the ingredient list short but mighty. It creates the perfect blend of herby flavors, tangy notes, and a creamy texture that’s hard to resist.
I love using avocado in green goddess dressing recipes because it has enough creaminess to rival mayo or sour cream. Plus, it’s packed with healthy fats and nutrients, making this dressing a nutritious addition to any meal.
Why You’ll Love It
- Made with simple ingredients that pack a punch of flavor.
- A great way to enjoy a lighter, vegan version of green goddess dressing.
- The creamy dressing is full of delicious natural flavors and healthy fats from avocado.
- A versatile dressing that would make the perfect addition to any meal.
Main Ingredients
(Note: These are the recipe’s starring ingredients, but you can find all the ingredients in the recipe card below!)
- Avocado: Make sure you use a ripe avocado for the perfect creamy texture.
- Shallot: The key to turning this into a restaurant-quality dressing.
- Garlic: Raw garlic will give this creamy avocado dressing the best flavor.
- Fresh basil: This herb adds a bright and fresh taste to the dressing.
- Olive oil: Adds richness and helps create the perfect creamy texture.
- Lemon: Makes the dressing more vibrant with hints of tanginess.
- Nutritional yeast: Boosts the nutritional profile and adds a subtle cheesy flavor.
- Rice vinegar: Balances out the flavors and adds a touch of sweetness.
Substitutions & Additions
Shallot: If you don’t have shallots on hand, a little bit of chopped red onion, white onion, or green onion can be used as a substitute.
Lemon: Don’t have lemon? Use fresh lime juice or more vinegar instead.
Rice vinegar: Apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar can be used as a substitute for rice vinegar if needed.
Add more herbs: I personally prefer to keep it simple by using fresh basil by itself, but you’re welcome to add more complexity to your dressing if you’d like. Fresh cilantro, parsley, and dill would also make great additions to this dressing. Just taste test as you go to make sure the flavors are balanced.
How to Make Avocado Green Goddess Salad Dressing
The steps are simple, and I’m outlining them below, but be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page to view the full, printable recipe card.
STEP 1 – BLEND INGREDIENTS
Start by adding all the ingredients (except water and salt) to a small food processor or blender. Pulse to blend, then process on high until the dressing is smooth.
STEP 2 – ADD WATER & SALT
Next, add 2-3 tablespoons of water, or enough to thin the dressing to the consistency you’re looking for. Add salt to taste.
STEP 3 – SERVE & ENJOY
That’s it! Serve with your favorite salad, low-carb pasta salad, or power bowl. I tossed it with some of my low-carb pasta, chopped cucumber, green onion, and cabbage to create a Green Goddess pasta salad that all eaters will love!
Tips for Best Results
- Add the water in a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Some people prefer a thicker dressing while others like it thinner.
- If your avocado salad dressing is a little thinner than you’d like, try adding a few extra tablespoons of avocado to thicken it up.
- If your avocado isn’t quite as ripe as you’d like it, microwave it for 30 seconds to help soften it up. This will make it easier to blend into a smooth and creamy dressing.
Storage
Store any remaining avocado green goddess dressing in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. The dressing may thicken up a bit in the fridge, so simply stir in a little extra water to thin it out before using it again.
Ways to Use Creamy Green Goddess Dressing
This great dressing can be added to your favorite salads, meats, pasta, and power bowls… even used as a dipping sauce! I have to say though, these Green Goddess Chicken Thighs were made to be slathered in this creamy dressing.
I also like to replace the Caesar dressing on this High-Protein Caesar Salad with this avocado green goddess dressing. It adds a delicious twist to a classic salad. You also can’t go wrong with adding to any of my Kaizen low-carb pastas. I especially like it in this High Protein Pasta Salad. The noodles hold the dressing really well, and it actually tastes like real pasta!
