What You Need to Make It
(Note: These are the recipe’s starring ingredients, but you can find all the ingredients in the recipe card below!)
- Chicken thighs: use boneless skinless chicken thighs for the most accurate total cooking time.
- Lemon: this recipe uses a lot of lemon! It’s an essential ingredient for brightening the dish.
- Fresh herbs: A combination of fresh chives, fresh Italian parsley, fresh basil, cilantro, mint, and dill put the “green” in green goddess sauce!
- Creme Fraiche: a fattier and thicker version of sour cream, creme Fraiche gives the green goddess salad dressing that creamy, rich base.
- Red onion: pickled red onion adds a lot of flavor to this easy chicken recipe that takes it to the top!
- Sumac: I pickled the red onion in a mixture of sumac, salt, and lemon juice. Mmm.

Substitutions
Chicken thighs: Feel free to use chicken breasts or bone-in instead of boneless thighs. Just keep in mind that the cooking time will vary.
Creme Fraiche: Sour cream or thick yogurt are great substitutes for creme Fraiche and will taste just as good as a creamy base for the sauce.
How to Make Green Goddess Chicken Thighs Recipe
The steps are simple, and I’m outlining them below, but be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page to view the full, printable recipe card. You can also watch how it comes together in my Instagram reel!
STEP 1 – MARINATE CHICKEN
Add your chicken thighs to a bowl. Drizzle with 1-2 tablespoons olive oil, the juice of a lemon, a couple generous pinches of salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Mix well, then ideally let this marinate for 2 hours to overnight, but if you want to make it right away, you can.
STEP 2 – COOK CHICKEN
Bring a pan to medium heat, add avocado oil and chicken to the hot skillet, and cook for 12-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken.
Pro Tip: I usually cook the first side down for 5 minutes, flip for 5, flip for 2, then flip for another minute.
STEP 2 – MAKE SAUCE
Process or blend the cilantro, parsley, basil, chives, mint, dill, shallot, garlic cloves, creme fraiche, zest and juice of 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Process well, taste, and adjust.
STEP 3 – MAKE PICKLED RED ONIONS
Thinly slice a red onion. Add to a bowl, sprinkle with 2-3 pinches of salt, add sumac and juice of 1 large lemon. Mix well, then let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, stirring a couple of times.
STEP 4 – COOK RICE
Finally, the base. I used my Kaizen low carb rice, but you can use regular rice, cauli rice, quinoa, or whatever you like. I boiled my rice for 5 minutes in a mixture of salted water and chicken broth.
STEP 5 – ASSEMBLE & ENJOY
When rice is done, add a serving to the bowl, with a heaping handful of greens, some chicken, and pile high with pickled red onions, red radish, fresh herbs, green goddess sauce, and white sesame seeds.
Serve and ENJOY!
